Guest Post: Anonymous Teacher.

I write this blog as somewhat of an outsider, I don’t have a child with ASD and I am not a therapist or a teacher of children with ASD.  I teach children with hearing loss. My path crosses with the ASD community often though; as I have had several children with ASD in my class and I teach with teachers of ASD children. I have a bit of advice and several questions of my own.

Our communities have a lot in common.  The disability is not always immediately evident to the general public; they wonder why the child behaves the way they do. Parents agonize over the cause of the disability. There are different strategies to use to overcome the disability, and there is great disagreement among both parents and professionals over the strategies to use. Many parents are looking for quick fixes for the disability. .

My advise; help educate the public; each one of us is responsible for helping the public understand our children..  The cause of ASD is probably variable just like hearing impairment, which can be due to genetics, environmental factors (certain prescription drugs can cause hearing impairment) , illness both prenatal and postnatal, etc.  While it is important to know the causes, and it must be pursued, it does no good for your child to fixate on the cause. Strategies are unique for each child, you as parents know your family and your child best, but know public educators are bound by evidence based practice; we have to use strategies that have been proven to have the most potential for having successful outcomes. Be mindful that if you are using public education that you are not being promised the most and best of every therapy, but an adequate amount of what your child needs, just like the typical public school student. Finally just as with hearing loss there are no quick fixes

My questions and concerns to the community: I need resources or at least to hear from educators, and parents that have children that are hearing impaired and have ASD. I would Like to hear who diagnosed (I find that once a child is diagnosed with hearing impairment all behaviors are blamed on the hearing impairment and ASD is dismissed.)  I would like to know what setting the child is in (ASD class, or hearing impaired class) and how each disability is being addressed (hearing impaired classes and ASD classes are very different in nature), and finally  anyone that has ASD and  a cochlear implant I would be interested to know if the sensory input that the cochlear implant gave was a problem.

I appreciate your interest as an outsider, so to speak. Since ASD is recently described in the literature, there are many of us who were either misdiagnosed or mistreated as children,

But we don’t vaporize at 18. So often it seems no one cares what happens as we grow up, and the compensatory strategies we are forced to learn in order to be accepted by society end up hurting us as adults because adults are expected to have fine-tuned social skills and the better we compensate the more we are seen as “normal” and the less others are willing to give us a chance. Instead we are assumed to be lazy or motivationally challenged in some way.

The kids are precious, and the younger they are when they learn to demystify “normal” language and socialization the better, but soon they’ll be adults and be left without support in a hostile and intolerant world (those who claim to be tolerant are in fact intolerant of all who are not like them). Please don’t forget the adults. We haven’t all been locked away (yet).
