IHSS – Financial aid for families dealing with autism

by Dele

I was aware that IHSS was available for senior citizens, but I was recently informed that it can also be of benefit to families in the autism community as well. For qualified families, the state pays an individual caregiver to stay home and care for a developmentally disabled child (please note that caregivers do not have to be parents of the child). Parents and caregivers are granted a specific amount of hours a month in which the state pays them to stay at home and look after their children. A lot of parents do stay home and look after their children, but very few know that they can also receive these IHSS services while they remain at home. Parents are granted either 195 or 283 hours of pay a month, but the hours of pay for other types of family members, friends, or caregivers may vary. Each county in the state of California determines the hourly rate that they will pay to parents and caregivers. If a child has an autism diagnosis and a Medi-Cal DDS (institutional deeming) waiver (obtained through a regional center), then there is a good chance that that family can qualify for the program.

Very few people know about this program and the state takes very little effort to let families know that it exists. Often times when families do get informed about the program and call-in to request services, they are denied of the services or they are granted far fewer monthly hours than they deserve. In the event that any family is denied services (or receives fewer than 195 hours per month), you can have them get in contact with me. I am also available to answer any questions that your families may have about IHSS. We have been in close contact with an organization that works with autism families and especially low-income autism families to obtain IHSS benefits for children diagnosed with developmental disabilities. They have already assisted over 20 families from TheAUTSPOT by getting these IHSS service for them. The majority of our families did not even know about IHSS, or that something like this even existed.

If you would like to learn more about IHSS or if you have been denied or granted fewer hours of services than you deserve, be sure to contact us at: info@theautspot.com
