Sensory Processing Issues: Hear no Evil, See no Evil, Feel no Evil
Sensory Processing Issues: Hear no Evil, See no Evil, Feel no Evil
Can you imagine what it would be like to be assaulted by everything in your environment all the time? Where sounds and smells confuse and overwhelm you? Do you have an idea what it would be like to not know where your body is? If you do, then you have a sensory processing issue or you know someone very well that does. Another one of the big three obstacles in Autism is Sensory processing issues, also known as Sensory Dysfunction. (The other two being Anxiety - see previous post, and Communication- which will be my next one)
Sensory processing issues occur in all of us to some degree. Lights can be too bright, music too loud, maybe you don’t like to wear certain materials, or the texture of certain foods? We often see children “bouncing off the walls” with what may look like but isn’t always, hyperactivity. These things happen when any of the connections being made from the sensory system and brain are off. For children that suffer from a Sensory processing disorder this happens on a regular basis, and there are usually many issues from multiple senses. It occurs from too much input from the environment or not enough input, and with children who are on the spectrum it also occurs from not knowing where their body is in space and they are looking to anchor themselves.
Sensory issues manifest as meltdowns, behavior issues, and as hyper-activity. Children sometimes bounce themselves off of the walls, furniture, and even you so they can feel their body. When their systems are over-taxed, what would seem as normal stimulus can be painful. Often the behavior can happen for reason, whether it is too much sensory or not enough. Hence, the major challenge in trying to help when you are also dealing with a gap in communication. Sensory disorder also affects the child’s ability to use proper motor planning, so they are clumsy and falling down a lot. And this will also be the reason often why a child is not toilet training; they simply cannot feel that sensation of having to go.
Sensory processing disorder is a huge topic because it covers about seven different areas of the sensory system, (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, body awareness which includes where the body is in space, and sense of physiological conditions and emotions of the body) and frankly entire books are devoted to the subject.
Hear No Evil
Auditory is a big one for Noah ( and myself at times), he would cover his ears a sometimes run away screaming from the vacuum cleaner, too many people talking, fireworks, the sound of cars, running buses, the blender and just about any household appliances. Certain sounds when heard send a shock through the body, like electricity almost. It is a very uncomfortable and what I would call “gross feeling”. One of the problems Noah has had is differentiating between sounds, so multiple people having a conversation (even if they are not talking over each other) is confusing and upsetting to him. Many children can find being a restaurant or a grocery store very scary and upsetting because there are so many sounds. The humming of fluorescent lights, the clicking of scanners and cash registers, people talking in the back ground, squeaky cart wheels, glasses clinking, and silverware on plates, all of these things if we are regulated get filtered out. But when we are not, they just bombard us.
See No Evil
Visual sensory overload is mostly seen as bright lights from the sun or from regular lights. But more often it is a visual stimulation that is sensory seeking as opposed to avoidance. Snow coming out of the sky to children with sensory integration problems will “stim” from the snow. Meaning they will become mesmerized and often bounce around trying to touch it. Bubbles can produce the same sensation for when there is no snow. Noah loves anything with flashy lights and especially things that spin and flash, which is good stuff.
Feel No Evil
Textures of clothing, being touched or bumped into, food all affect a person on a tactile level. To this day I do not wear polyester, and I hate jeans. Noah will also not wear things that are “itchy”, things that may not be itchy to the next person, but are too him. And since he has more language now, he can at least say this. When before if he was uncomfortable and freaking out you didn’t know why, when it could have just been a tag in his clothing or a seam.
What you can do
A great Occupational Therapist is a NECCISITY. And if you can’t afford one, your school district will provide one. Having a very in tune and knowledgeable, and FUN OT has made a HUGE difference in Noah’s quality of life; I can’t stress enough the magic of their hands. OT’s do activities with your child tailored to their specific needs. Sometimes it small tactile activities like working with shaving cream, stringing beads, doing other messy activities, and also refining how to hold a pencil correctly and use scissors. They also work with gross motor, and motor planning activities where they have the child climb, apply deep pressure, swinging, and Noah’s favorite, crashing them on their bed. Using a trampoline is also very helpful to bounce those sensations away. But the magic comes from them really learning your child, being able to read their body language to tell whether there feeling very sluggish and out of touch with their bodies, or everything is just going too fast and is overwhelming them.
Visually we have supplied light spinners and use bubbles as well as allowing TV and computer time. Because Noah is usually seeking these sensations. Auditory we keep the amount of people in the house to a manageable level, with the idea of increasing it overtime. This is also why it is very important to have a child in a small classroom. And Texture wise, I have done my best to provide what clothing I can that is seamless or at least have seams that do not bother him. I can say that mostly everything I have ever purchased at OLD NAVY has been a success, and they are very reasonably priced.
Always remember every child is different, the main thing to remember is that all behavior exist for one reason or another. Sometimes it is a simple solution, and the child is upset because their sensory system is being assaulted. But I do believe that just about every child can benefit from doing sensory activities, and for their parents to be in touch with what is going on with them. The severity does vary, and Noah was very severely impaired before we changed his diet and were getting regular OT. But from it he can tolerate much more now than before. Sometimes all it takes is scooping them up and spinning them around a bit to help keep them grounded.

Children and Teens With ADHD and Depression
Parent of children with ADHD must pay attention if their child’s behavior changes. Sometimes when a very active child becomes more quiet, their parents believe this is a good sign because the hyperactivity is subsiding. Unfortunately their child could be exhibiting symptoms of depression.
In fact, children and teens with ADHD are at risk for developing depression as much as 3 times greater than for other children. As many as 25% of teens with ADHD are depressed. Research points to two underlying factors that can trigger depression in children or teens with ADHD.
Depression shares certain symptoms with ADHD, such as inability to concentrate, mood swings, irritability and agitated behavior, making it difficult to know whether a child is suffering from depression, ADHD or both. Seek professional help for an accurate and timely diagnosis.
We can assume that many children with ADHD experience daily negative feedback from parents, teachers, bus drivers and even their peers lowering their self-esteem. This constant feeling of malaise with the world around them, results in enough stress, frustration and anger that they can be driven to depression.
But the depression is not only cause by demoralization that can result from the day to day struggles of dealing with ADHD. Research has suggested that depression in children and teens with ADHD is a co-morbid disorder. ADHD and depression co-exist and have to be both treated separately
Parents must be vigilant to note any changes in their child with ADHD because the depression must be attended to. Some changes and behaviors that should trigger an alarm bell are:
*No energy or fatigue nearly every day
* Stops talking, withdraws from the family by retreating into his/her room
* Odd sleeping patterns , insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
* Constant low, depressed or irritable mood most of the day
* Overly emotional over trivial matters, frequent mood changes
*Loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities
*Changes in eating habits accompanied by significant weight loss or weight gain
*Tearfulness or frequent crying
*Feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt
*A strong sense of not being understood and approved of by parents, siblings, or peers
*Feelings of wanting to leave home, wanting to run away
*Recurrent thoughts of death and/or suicidal thoughts
At the first signs of depression seek professional help. Left untreated, depression can lead to problems at home and school, drug abuse, self-loathing and escalate from there. It is a fact that untreated depression is very risky and potentially fatal.
Take action right away. The parents and other adults in a child's life must intervene because the child does not understand what depression is and he does not realize that how he is feeling in not the norm.
A professional evaluation is needed to distinguish between normal moodiness, ADHD symptoms and depression. Depression does not go away by itself. With proper diagnosis and treatment a depressed child or teen can be greatly helped.
Always keep open lines of communications with your child, your child's friends and teachers. Parents and teachers working together, with the child following a professional’s counsel, is the only way to assure your child will get all the guidance and support he needs for both his ADHD and depression
What were the first symptoms you noticed when your child became depressed?

GROUND BREAKING STUDY!!! Two Grade Levels “JUMP” in just 12 Weeks HUGE Advancement for Kids with ADHD!
GROUND BREAKING STUDY!!! Two Grade Levels “JUMP” in just 12 Weeks HUGE Advancement for Kids with ADHD!
Board Certified, Dr. Nelson Mane’, Tampa said,”Many children go from Worst to First in their class and have standardized testing scores improved!”
“There is a great amount of research behind the concepts of Hemispheric Integration Therapy and the success it is having with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Last year the concept of functional disconnection syndrome was presented in the scientific literature and now the first outcome study was published in the “International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health”, adds Mane’.
“This is a drug-free approach for the world of ADHD and learning disabilities, and with such significant improvement in a 12 week period amazes many parents and teachers alike.”
Dr Nelson Mane a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist has been interviewed by Spectrum Magazine, and the Tampa ABC, CBS, NBC affiliates as well as Bay News 9 for his work applying Hemispheric Integration Therapy and functional neurology for children and adults with ADHD, learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. He was featured in the Autism documentary “Walking in the Dark: Finding the Light in Autism.”
Study: published in the “International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health. Tampa, Aug 23, 2010Improvements as much as 2 to 4 grade levels upon pre-and post-WIAT (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test) with regard to reading, comprehension, written and oral expression and math reasoning were observed after a 12 week program of Hemispheric Integration Therapy. The program consisted of procedures such as aerobic and strength conditioning exercises, motor training including rhythm and timing exercises, sensory stimulation as well as academic training. A WIAT is a common test used by psychologist and the school systems to assess children with ADD and ADHD as well as other learning disorders. The WIAT includes subtest such as word reading, reading comprehension, math reasoning, spelling, written expression, listening comprehension and oral expression. The Brown Scale an ADHD assessment tool also showed improvements. The study was conducted by the F.R. Carrick Institute for Clinical Ergonomics, Rehabilitation and Applied Neuroscience, University of Haifa, DeMontfort University, and the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies.

“Many students read below their academic grade level. Eye movement coordination at near point is crucial for reading readiness. The eyes should move together, and your brain initiates eye movement to the next word, establishing uniform pauses between words and stops your eyes at the end of a sentence. We are using reading and eye movement to assess brain function. It is impossible to read well if your brain is not properly “tuned.” If identifiable issues are corrected, you will get progress faster with tutors and reading programs.
New study shows you can boost your child’s reading level by 2 grades on average

Autism, supplements and brain health
http://blog.spectrumsupplements.com/blog/special-needs-children/autism-supplements-and-brain-health-2/"><p><strong>More studies show that http://www.spectrumsupplements.com">nutritional supplements and diet might
help in the treatment of mental health conditions such as autism, ADD
