IEP case conference on the 6th and need HELP!!!
Posted on 04 Jan, 2010

Does anyone else have a problem "convincing" the school that their son (with Asperger's) is in worse shape then what they think????

My son is 8 1/2 and is only in second grade (repeated 1st). We found out the summer after his second year of first grade that he had Asperger's, but was diagnosed with Bipolar at 2. Anyway, I tried for two years to get him tested knowing he had SOMETHING going on. We transferred to a new elem. school and he was tested right away. I was very impressed by this school and their diligence in getting him the resources he needed.
But now there's a problem. They're trying to tell me that HE DOESN'T HAVE AUTISM ANYMORE. Whaaaat??? They tell me that he had symptoms at the beginning of school, but not anymore. I'm trying to convince them to move him to an EH (emotionally handicapped) class, but they claim it's not necessary. I try to tell them in our IEP meetings that they just need to wait it out, because the minute you let your guard down he'll do something. I'm constantly on my guard for that very reason. I'm constantly telling them "the only thing predictable is his unpredictability".
Is it possible for Asperger/Autistic kids to "slow down" or "get comfortable" in their surroundings to where they don't do anything? Should I believe what his teachers and speech teacher (she also teaches socialization skills) are saying? Does anyone think I need an advocate?
I try to tell them that WE are the ones who have adapted to HIS world...not the other way around. What am I supposed to do??

UPDATE: It was decided that it would be best for him to transfer to the EH class. Yay! So glad this worked out for him. I think it will be better for him in the long run.

I don't know much but here's my two cents: Aspergers 24-Hour Crisis Hotline 1 (877) 723-3422 I hope it all works out for you!

You probably do need some kind of advocate to come into the meeting with you, b/c they know all the details behind similar issues. Because i am sure it doesn't say anywhere in your son's IEP that his rights or services will be abandoned if he starts regressing or showing less signs of the disorder. Does it?

I'm not sure what area you live in but where I live in Ventura County there is a free advocacy program called AREA BOARD 9. I had them as a back up for me in case the school district wouldn't give them what he needed. I also invited my sons psychologist to the IEP so he could put in his view on what my son needed. Make sure you get an extended version of your parent rights and remember, you don't have to sign the IEP until you fully agree with their decision... Go to google and type in free special needs advocacy in (whatever area you live in) and see what comes up... Good luck.
