Bowel MovementsPosted on 19 Apr, 2010
My 14 month had a herniated belly button when she was born and right now she still has problems with bowel movements. We have to put Karo syrup in her bottles and be careful of what baby foods she eats and right now she doesn't really eat solids. Do you have any advice? Also she was accessed by Regional recently so she's on the spectrum.

We have our son on a Casein-free/Gluten-free diet - he is almost 3 and has been on the diet for about one month. His constipation has COMPLETELY STOPPED. He know drinks Hemp Milk, Almond Milk and Coconut Milk. We also use Hemp Protein Powder, Blue-Green Algae, Co Enzyme Q10, Folic Acid, B6, B12, a multi-vitamin and Probiotics for his immune system and GI tract. Difference in behavior is evident - no more constipation, no more gas build-up, sleeps better. We are also using EDTA for Chelation per our Occupation Therapist - who also takes a more natural approach to medical issues, as we do. I strongly advise eliminating dairy from the diet - we are the only species that continues to consume milk (unnecessarily) after being weaned, and into adulthood - and we are consuming milk from ANOTHER species - not logical.

My five year old son has had constipation since he was born. He also had a heniated belly button which was corrected with surgery last year. I took him to 3 different pediatricians, DAN! doctor, and a pediatric GI doctor. We tried Miralax, Activia, benefiber, karo syrup, magnesium and Vitamin C supplements, and prunes. The doctors ran a number of tests including barrium enemas and colonoscopy to no avail. You name it, we tried it! The thing that has worked best to keep it soft is eating only fruit for breakfast. However, on occasion (maybe a couple of times a month - down from once a week) we give him an enema when he gets backed up.
Good luck!

Mirilax is the bomb, I wish we'd put it in her bottle instead of with water the first time we tried it. With her formula it works miracles.

yes i agree, miralax! my daughter is 5, and she has to have a half cup daily. She has had bowel issues since infancy. she had GERD as an infant and feeding issues so she was on formula till she was about 16,17mths old. If she doesnt take a lax her bowels stay packed, she will only go in small increments. It is working well.

Try Liquid Acidophilus. It can be purchased at any health food stors. Make sure it doesn't have milk product in it. Acidophilus replaces bad bacteria in the gut with good bacteria. It helps all of us.

Yeah, Miralax has worked for a lot of children. You should also have your kid tested for allergies. I don't think a lot parents know that allergies can be the great cause of it all! So, I would suggest you look into that too!

Thanks everyone we'll be looking for a gastroenteritis, but we're going to try the Miralax out again. It upset her stomach the first time we tried it, but I'm going to put it in her milk bottle this time.

search the resources section for gastroenterologists in your area. They cleared up my sons bowels. Does your kid eat gluten or casein (wheat, milk products)? That could be an issue.
