My Neighbor
Posted on 24 Apr, 2010

HELP!!!!! I have a ten year old son name Timmy, who is living with Autism and Sensory Disorders. My house is very small only eight hundred square feet and my neighbors 47yr. old brother likes to play his drums and loud music in there garage. There garage is more like a wood shed and he is literally four feet from my sons bedroom. I have contacted the police dept. and was told that they were no violating any ordinance since it was not being played after ten at night. You might as well play the drums in my livingroom. I can tell that they bother my son because he will go outside and play on the opposite side of the house and get into his own private world. When they stop he will come back in the house. He has never said anything, it is in his behavior. I contacted Disabilities of California and her landord and was told the same thing as the police dept. I dont know what to do. I did speak with my neighbor who also has a disabled child, I was hoping she would understand, but it got worse, she is a drug addict, I dont think I need to say any more about her.

Hi There, My son has autism and also hates noise. I agree with others that maybe try earplugs. Noise used to bother my son so much that we actually went to Home Depot and got the kind that are "industrial strength" so to speak. :-) They do a great job of keeping out noise. Ironically my son plays the drums now that he is older. The noise still bothers him when they are warming up in band but then he is okay when the music starts.

God bless you too.... I had to use ear muffs with loud music/noises for my 5 year old son. I notice my son had an issue at the movie theaters, so we left early... but then I tried earmuffin and it seems to work -- we just recent saw "How to train a dragon" I am not sure if this might help but just a thought hugs to you and timmy --

You're welcome. Also the earplug company we use to use is called Mack, they should be at local cvs or walgreen. I believe we used the earseal ones. .macksearplugs.com

Thank you, that is an option I have been looking into. I filed bankruptcy two years ago so I cant sell my house for one more year. Come March of 2011 my house will be up for sell. Thank you.

For the loud drumming part, try ear plugs, they use to help my daughter with her hearing sensory with different loud noises or confort her in class. She doesn't use them any more now as she's gotten use to alot of sounds. Although with her she's always loved drums, guitars ect.
If you can't find some thing to help him I recommend to save up to move. We did it for my daughters education and to be honest with you rent cost a arm and a leg, but it's wort it for her.

We got our son an IPod. It has James Taylor,Barry Manilow,George Winston (December) on it and alot of musical instument on it. It relaxes him alot. Sometimes it helps him sleep threw the night. It is also a treat for him after he does his chores, I'll put another song on for him.
It sounds horrible for anyone to live in that environment. Best Wishes to you and your family.

Wow, i'm sorry to hear this. That sounds terribly annoying for anybody to have to deal with!

My son is sensitive to vibrations like that too, but he actually likes it most of the time. He says it "tickles". Good luck to you, I hope you find something that helps :)

RedRose Added: 25 Apr, 2010 6:59 am

Thank you all so much for these thoughts, No I have not thought of any of these. It is loud but I think it is the vibration that gets to him. Its kind of like being at a parade and the band walks by you can feel it through your whole body. I will defenantly look into all of these possibilities. Thanks again.

Does your son like any music? I gave my son a discman and bunch of cds of music he liked, and he would just go put his headphones on when there was noise he didn't like. Even though it still kinda put him in his own world, the music was stimulating to him, and it really made him happy which affected his overall behavior, and staved off a possible tantrum caused by the original commotion.

Yeah, or look into the tomatis method! I know it's done wonders for children that are auditory sensitive.

BarbaraHutch Added: 24 Apr, 2010 6:12 pm

have you thought of providing your son with auditory integration?
