Autistic Man Arrested/Denied Medical Help
Posted on 11 May, 2010

On Saturday, April 3rd, my 28 yr old son Stephen Puckett was having seizures and became aggressive. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, OU Medical Center, but was not allowed admittance to the hospital because he has autism. The hospital said they were just not equipped to deal with his autism. After arriving home the seizures continued and 2 more trips were made to the hospital by ambulance on Sun and Mon. On the last trip April 5th, the doctor who saw him in the ER said he was going to do everything he could to get Stephen admitted and stabilized. While waiting for the doctor to come back, Stephen hit and kicked 2 police officers and he was then handcuffed in the bed. Finally at the end of the day the doctor came back to say he had gone to the top administrators in the hospital and called around the state of Oklahoma, but no one wanted to take Stephen because he has autism. The officers had observed that Stephen needed medical help and they said if they charged him with assault and took him to the county jail, he could at least get medical treatment there. That was the only option we were left with. It was heartbreaking to watch Stephen stagger out of the hospital in handcuffs, drooling, having seizures, and saying to the officer, "But I'm a good boy officer." One week later a Judge wrote an order that he be taken by ambulance to a hospital in Ada, OK for treatment. You can view the news coverage on Youtube by typing in, 'Autistic Man Arrested'. This discrimination must end. Stephen needed medical help, not jail. Please tell others about his story so we can end this kind of abuse. Sincerely, Mary Ann Puckett

I understand what happened, but if there is going to be change then you need to take this situation and do something with it. Dont wait for this to happen to someone else and hope that they do something. Everything happens for a reason. I am sure you can find a number of attorneys that will take this case. Everyone was at fault. It should not take the jail to give medical attention and to keep your son from you. The hospital is not going to change there policies if they continue to get away with things like this. Yes, it was nice of the officers to help. By law if they would of stood by and did nothing after witnessing what the doctors and hospital were doing then they also would have been personally liable. Thank You and good lluck.

The officers who filed charges against Stephen were actually trying to help us because they witnessed the hospitals denial to admit and treat him and going to jail was our only option of getting needed medical help for him. On April 5th, the day of Stephen's arrest, that was our 3rd trip to the ER by ambulance which started on April 3rd. Every ER doc who saw Stephen said that he needed to be admitted and stabilized but the hospital administration would not allow that to happen because of his autism. This problem must be corrected because jail should not be the only option for someone because they have a disability. Stephen suffered greatly by being put through this nightmare and was not allowed to see us until his hearing one week later. At the hearing a Judge wrote an order that the charges against him be dropped and that he be taken by ambulance to a hospital in Ada, OK for treatment. I greatly appreciate the support for Stephen and our family. I am hopeful that this horrble event will bring about change in hospital policies for others as well. Sincerely, Mary Ann Puckett

I am so sorry this happened, as I was reading this I could not help but cry. It broke my heart, but unfortunantly things like this do have to happen, so we can stand up and change laws or make some for are children with Autism. Please do not sit on this but take action. Do what ever it takes so this never happens again. God bless you and your son.

Wow! The world is so cruel! I will definitely send this out to everyone I know. I am sure you will win this case and best of luck. Unbelievable...

That is violation of civil rights and you should look up what yours and your son's legal rights are because you will definitely have a case against the hospital and police officers.
