autism/aspergers.
Posted on 18 May, 2010

my 12 year old son started high school last year,he has settled in quite well, although he has experienced some bullying, which the school are taking steps to put a stop to it.earlier this year,my sons head of year told me they think he might have autism or aspergers, but,he,s not been assessed for either condition.i know there are different degrees of asd,so,any advice/support would be gratefully received.my son is highly emotional, angry& aggressive, especially towards my youngest son(he,s 7),usually because my youngest loves to wind the 12 year old, frequently& he is unable to express his emotions calmly& rationally,so,he either cries or gets very angry& physically violent towards the 7 year old,by punching, kicking, biting, etc.my eldest son was diagnosed with dyspraxia a few years ago, but,i can,t help wondering if there is a link between dyspraxia& asd.

Yes get an assessment and yes dyspraxia can occur with AS ,although I don't know if there is a causal link I certainly have coordination problems.

Agree as to the evaluation. The sooner the better. Please be actively monitoring the bullying at your son's school! Don't trust the administration to stop it. Keep polite but firm pressure on his principal. Talk to his friends and other kids in his classes to see if they've seen or heard any incidences. Pick him up after school or arrange a ride with a friend's parent. And document everything in a journal. This boy needs a safe harbor. He is being teased at school and at home. Please seek family counseling with a therapist trained in developmental disabilities. Good luck.

Things will be a lot easier after you assess your child. I agree...you will have a better idea of what direction to go towards after the assessment

Yeah, i agree, have your child assessed first. A connection to dyspraxia may or may not be present, but you should be more concerned about what's actually going on.

I think it is important to educate kids about their peers who have AS so there will be less bullying.
