ASD daughter age 24Posted on 11 Jun, 2010
I have the pleasure, and the pain too, of having a beautiful daughter who is diagnosed with Autistic spectrum disorder and a moderate learning disability.
I used to feel hard done by! and jealous of my friends with "normal" kids.
I now feel blessed, everyone elses kids have grown up to be cheeky, moneygrabbing creatures, my daughter is still my child, and my best friend, and if the magic fairy came tomorrow to ask if I wanted her turned into a "normal" 24 year old, I would have to say "no thanks", Am I lucky or just selfiish?

Great story, I took my 5yr old daughter(was 4 then) to the roger williams zoo last summer with my cousin and her 2 children. At the end of the day she said to me "kelly, i enjoyed myself so much watching starlaya today. I never seen a kid so genuinely excited in my life to just be at the zoo." It was true, my daughter with her love of animals could not contain the happiness and fullfillment she recieved by being around something she was so passionate about! One other time was when i brought her to see The Princess and the Frog. I was almost in tears watching her react to the music and she was singing and clapping, she was so into it it was great. I didnt even care about any one else's reaction, nobody was gonna take that away from her if i had a say! (luckily the theater wasnt crowded and the other parents enjoyed watching her excitement too)So i totally get what Jo-Jo is saying!thanks for sharing!

Jenny took me to her special needs youth club tonight, and we had a beetle drive, her face lit up when she won a small prize, and it made my night to see her so proud of a small bottle of bubble bath

This was an amazing post! Our children are our children, and we wouldn't want them any other way!

That's how i feel about my daughter. I nearly lost it when she was diagnosed with ASD 4 yrs ago when she was 9. I am just now in a good place.
She is funny , bright ,beautiful, and beautifully honest, a rare trait these days. I feel sorry for her that she is surrounded by us so called normal people who bitch, backstab and are generally cruel to each other. This aspect of our makeup she just cannot grasp ,and i'm glad she can't i envy her genuine niceness.
She's in mainstream school, but she is smart enough to know not to follow the in crowd smoking, drinking, dating. I ask myself sometimes is it her that really has the learning difficulty or them.

That's great, our children are God's gift. They know no evil and dish out no evil....God gave them a free ticket to his kingdom of heaven.
