New to site but not new to Autism...Posted on 24 Jun, 2010
Hello all,
Just wanted to introduce myself and tell a little about us. My name is Apryl and full time mom to 2 smart, adorable boys both of which have been DX with ASD's but both are on different ends of the scale.
My oldest, Mikey almost 8, was DX at 4 1/2 with Asperger's, ADHD, Anxiety, Auditory Sensory Issues, mood disorder's, sleep issues and possible Bipolar type 1. He is on the higher end of the scale. Sees a therapist for his moods and social issues. Attends mainstream class but does have an IEP in place and receive's help with math and english/writing.
My youngest, Bradley 6, was DX at 3 with Asperger's, ADHD, Anxiety, Phobia Disorder's, OCD, SID, PDD-NOS, developmental delays, Anger Issues, TIC's (both vocal and motor), tremor's, Speech Issues. He is on the low to middle end of the scale. We went through several IEP's during his first year in school, he was in a mainstream Kindergarten class but his sensory issues made it impossible for him to stay mainstream so he went full time SPED class which he excelled in. He receive's Speech, OT, and help in all areas and excelled in reading this past year. Outside of school he receive's OT and sees a therapist as well. He has also been excepted in the Marcus Autism Center and may receive a new DX. Just a wait and see deal. His SPED teacher is wanting to see how he does in mainstream class this coming year, I'm hopeful but nervous too!!
I'm sure I'll need help with an issue and this seems like a good place to ask for some support!!
Glad to be here :O)

Hello. I am from Carrollton as well. My daughter has not been diagnosed with Autism, but she definitely has tendencies. She also is epileptic. She is being retested within the next month as we believe that she might have PDD-NOS and Sensory Integration disorder. I would love to talk to you about the resources that you have found in carrollton. My daughter starts Pre-k nest year and we were hoping to put her in the Central school system. But i am wondering how the programs compare to Carrollton. She has been through pals, and babies can't wait...with OT's and Speach Therapists for 2 years now. We are just trying to figure out the next step. We jsut started the CF diet and we are moving into the Gluton Free diet this coming week. I am starting to beliece that she has a lot of food intolerances (not allergies) that might really be helped by this diet. We have already seen significant change from the casein free diet. Have you tried this? I am so overwhelemed by it all and have thought about doing the IgG food sensitivity test but am trying to find if they do it in town. In my reading I have found that food sensitivities can affect a lot of things, from ADHD, Depression, Autism, etc. I am curious to hear what you think and any resources you have found in Carroll county or the surrounding areas.

Hi ! I'm new to this site . My husband and I have 2 boys age 12 and 10 . Brandon is 12 . He has struggled socially and academically for his entire life . At age 6 he was diagnosed as having anxiety disorder ( NOS ) , ADD , and learning disabled . He got put on Strattera and received modifications to some classes . Still it really didn't seem to ease his frustration . Finally at age 10 he was re-diagnosed as having Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Sensory Integration Disorder and Anxiety Disorder . This year he started gr 6 . He is finally enjoying school and developing a social life . It's so hard to see your child not enjoy what should be the best part of his life . Our youngest son is 10 . He has Cerebral Palsy as a result of premature birth .

and one more thing .. placing a child in a mainstream class can be put in IEP on a trial basis. You can do one class a day, a week or every day of the week . IEP's get schools extra Federal funding. Here it Florida it was decided on what they call a matrix system - the schools here got an extra $37,000 a year just to have my oldest daughter in it. That is on top the regular funding for the average child they received on her behalf.

An IEP is a Federal thing that ALL states MUST honor .. if your child is an ESE program is mandated by IDEA - the individual disability education act. Never let the school tell you what is needed or available .. be involved - be informed and be pro-active. I learned this through many years of dealing with the school system here in Florida. I spent many hours researching IDEA. Just thought I would share :)

Not sure what state you live in, but in most you have the right to a IEP meeting to set up your son's school year and all that he need's. Your right as a parent is to demand a IEP meeting as soon as possible. Don't let the school board hodo you . Some school system's like to work at there pace. But your son well being and need's are the number one priortiy over all other. So as a parent demad your son's IEP meeting be set up as soon as possible. But like I told you some states and school's systems are different. Check with your local school board on who you need to talk to.

@Jason_Halloway~~there isn't much resources where we live but more closer to the Atlanta area in the more, hmm...oh "well to do" areas, one's who can afford the more exspensive resources. Course if I had that kind of money I'd pay anything for my boys to get the help they so deserve, but we don't so it's unfortunate.
But what resources we do get the people are wonderful and we are greatful to be there. My youngest who is on the lower to middle end of the spectrum receives OT (through the school), Speech (through the school) and we have just started with Marcus Institute.
I'm looking into getting him a service dog and going to check out Hippotherapy as well as try to get him private OT and PT.

Welcome to this site, Amomsluv42's. Seems you are doing a good job with your 2 children by reading what has been accomplished up to now. On this site you should meet parents in just the same position as you and there are many resources listed, blogged about etc. Have a good summer with your family. Do not worry too much about your child trying mainstreaming again...if it does not work out, other accomodations will have to be made. Remember the teachers want what is best for the children also...take it from a retired teacher who knows a lot about it. Lorna
