Apartment/Condo living
Posted on 15 Oct, 2010

Hi everyone,

Does anyone here live in an apartment or a condo?

We moved from our nice big house into the city to be closer to autism services. But that means we are no longer in a house :(

What do you do about noise coming from your apartment so your family doesn't disturb neighbors and so your neighbors don't bother your family with their noise?

I think I have a pretty good rapport going on with the neighbors and the management, but I have found that most people are just ignorant and impatient of Autism. Many people acknowledge it but there are still some that just don't believe it exists. I don't say that to be judgemental, they just don't know what they don't know... So I try my best to be kind, respectful, educational, but I also just need be able to relax.

I put in for a transfer to a larger unit (hoping for the 4 bedroom). And I am planning on getting some wrestling mats to help with the noise and just for fun!

I believe that if your are respectful towards them, and they are aware of your situation they will be respectful towards you Elizabeth. I mean, It definitely depends on your neighbors...But I don't see why other adults wouldn't sympathize with parents such as ourselves based on our situations.

You will be fine. A good attitude will take you a long way

That is so true, unfortunately. I just gotta keep a good attitude about it.

Live in a Condo also and sometimes you do get blamed for some noise that isn't even coming from your very own unit. Good luck :-)

Ours has terrible insulation. I am putting in for a transfer to a larger unit. We only took the smaller unit since we moved the weekend right before Elijah's assessments started. Our neighbors are not really mean but they are starting to complain to me... Sometimes for noise that isn't coming from our unit (like the other day when we were all resting and watching a movie). It is a very special kind of stress. yuck. Just very thankful for the sunny fall weather so we can be outside more.

I see your concern, and we live in a condo as well. I guess at the end of the day, it just depends what kind of neighbors you get and how cooperative / nice they are ? Also depends how your condo is constructed in regards to the amount of noise units next to one another are able to hear.

Amazing for how much you do for your child / family

You put your child before yourself...moving from a bigger home, to something smaller just to be closer to your child's autism services. Simply Amazing Elizabeth

Thanks Patsy. I can't expect from others what I am not willing to give myself.

I think it is awesome that you are watching out for your neighbors and being so respectful (by putting rug out, bed on floor, etc). I also think it is important to be respectful towards others, no matter what situation anyone is...

I don't think I am doing anything wrong. But we do want to be respectful members of our community. For example, I put a runner rug through the kitchen where wr have tile that echos a lot when toys grind across the floor. I also put my sons bed on the floor so he can jump on it, and use some of what the doctor called "unrestrainable energy". He likes to wrestle his older brother so I am considering buying a small wrestling mat.

I don't think it's that big of a deal Elizabeth. What you did was right and moved for your child...you shouldn't worry about anything but getting those proper services.

I agree..you should look at the bigger situation, because it is good that you moved closer to services. I also think a simple introduction to the neighbors can't hurt. Good luck!

It is always good to be closer to services.

I think any ideas could be useful to families in similar living conditions. Ideas?
