Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)

The Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) is a social interaction therapy that focuses on building up the motivation and tools necessary for successful interaction and relationship building. It is believed that children with autism are able to be involved in emotional relationships if they are exposed to them in a very gradual and systematic manner. Through the Relationship Development Intervention training, many children with autism, whom are commonly shied away from social interaction, begin to build an appreciation and desire for relationships.

Before the therapy is introduced, a child evaluation called a Relationship Development Assessment usually takes place, to determine the developmentally appropriate place to begin the treatment. The evaluation, which includes a number of fun-filled activities for children, must be performed by a certified RDI provider, or by an OTR/L, supervised by a certified RDI provider. The evaluation should be video taped in order for the caretaker and evaluator to get the greatest insight and make the best recommendations.
