Who would have thought that the ancient Chinese healing technique of acupuncture could be used to alleviate some of the symptoms that are common to autism?! An experiment was performed in the United States to study the effect of acupuncture on the symptoms of 22 children who were diagnosed with autism, and the results were encouraging. Out of the 22 children who were involved in the study, 20 had significant improvements in blood flow to the head. The idea is that improvement in blood flow creates a calming balance and neutrality in the body’s central nervous system, and often relieves the anxiety of those who are diagnosed with autism. This may improve both cognitive and functional abilities. (Read Autism Scalp Acupuncture)
In another study, 30 children who were diagnosed with autism showed significant improvements in language, social communication, attention span, as well as a decrease in hyperactivity after receiving acupuncture treatment. Here are a few items to take into consideration if you are considering acupuncture therapy for your child who has autism:
(1) Be sure to choose an autism acupuncture specialist who focuses on pediatric acupuncture
(2) Before the appointment, be sure your child is relaxed and calm. Refrain from any energetic activity before the appointment.
(3) Give your child a light meal a couple of hours before the appointment so that he or she will not become hungry and uncomfortable before the procedure
(4) If the appointment is for tongue acupuncture, be sure that your child brushes his teeth and tongue before the appointment so the doctor has a clean surface to operate on.
(5) Be sure your child is dressed in comfortable clothes (long sleeves and long pants).
(6)Work with your child’s doctor to create a schedule and some milestones and goals for the acupuncture treatment. Take notes and records of all the benefits of the acupuncture procedure.
