The Acting Academy for Autism is a serious theatre program for the high-functioning young person with autism or Asperger's Syndrome. We do not refer to autism as a disorder. We are not therapists, psychologists or celebrities. We are theatre teachers who have been working with young people for decades. Along the way, we have encountered children with autism who came alive on stage.This course has been designed by a group that includes teachers who are credentialed in special needs, adults who have autism, student teachers, and theatre training professionals. Our goal is to honor the sensibilities of young people with autism and provide a safe and fun atmosphere in which they can study theatre. Students will gain self confidence, a greater ability to overcome social challenges, and will learn to trust and learn to allow others to trust them. This is no different from any other good acting class. At the final class, the students will showcase their work: scenes, monologues and theatre history, along with original pieces that they write. Material comes from standard, published plays from 400 BC to the twenty-first century.
In order to create a successful program, classes are capped at ten students, with three teachers per class. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide individual teaching assistants and students are expected to respect the rules of the Academy. Each student will attend an interview before enrolling. |

My practice offers social skills groups, individual coaching, parent training, and school consultation in the area of social skills for children and adolescents. Group members learn through direct teaching, role-play, video analysis, practice assignments and feedback, and community experiences. Special attention is paid to carrying over skills into the every day environment with community-based experiences (i.e. bowling, hosting or going to a peer’s house), assigned practice opportunities outside of the office setting, social opportunities with neurotypical peers, and home and school consultation. I do a lot of work with middle school students, including supporting rising middle school students to cope with the new challenges of their school transition. Along with social skills groups, I also offer anger management groups, emotional awareness groups, and girl groups that cover a variety of social topics.
